It has been nearly a week since the primary ended, which leaves us just a few short months before the general election. Before we move on to the general election, let us pause for a moment and review who we have elected to move on from the primary to the general election in November.
In Shelby Township, approximately 27% of the residents participated in the primary. That means, in most cases, your neighbor, one each side of your house, did not vote. Many people want to complain about our elected officials, yet the vast majority simply does not care enough to vote. So it is up to just over a quarter of the population to decide what is best for all. I could write an entire article about voter apathy, but today is not that day for that.
It’s no surprise how many Republicans Shelby Township, no big revelation there, but it’s worth pointing out that only because much of the discussion is around the Republican candidates, so Dems, may a different blog will have your fix.
Let’s start with the governor’s race, where Rick Snyder won handily over Pete Hoekstra and Mike Cox. It was apparent in the days leading up to the primary that Snyder was spending huge amounts of money on television commercials, which served him well at the polls. In Shelby Township, Rick Snyder beat out Pete Hoekstra by over 1,800 votes.
In the run for State Senate (11th District), Jack Brandenburg edged out Leon Drolet, less than 700 votes separated the two in Shelby Township. This race was interesting as Jack Brandenburg plastered his name everywhere, literally, while Leon Drolet used both paper and telephone lines to try to get his message out. It was clear, while working at the polls, that many voters were upset at the way this race was run and took it out on the person they felt bothered them the most. I don’t know that anyone truly won this one, in the end it’s my opinion that everyone, in this race, lost.
The voters in Shelby Township also, overwhelmingly put Pete Lund back into office. Pete Lund took over 80% of the votes.
In the County Executive race, Randell Shafer won the right to run against Mark Hackel in the November election. I think it’s clear to anyone in Macomb County that Randell Shafer does not have a chance in this race, barring some sort of unforeseen circumstance or scandal.
This leaves us with the County Commissioner races for the 6th and 13th Districts where James Carabelli beat out Theresa Toia and Renee Michaels beat out Joe Sabatini, respectively to move on to the General Ballot in November.
